A few months ago I took a day class in fashion illustration, I haven't had much time to practice since then but whenever I do, I like to draw some of my favourite looks from the runway. As was the case last week, I started flicking through an old Vogue whilst watching the movie The Queen and decided to draw because the movie was making me feel quite morbid (it's a great film but perhaps not the most cheerful for a Friday night in). This is a look from the Fall 2012 Christian Dior Couture show, Raf Simons' debut collection for Dior. They say that history was made on this day, as the talented Belgium designer took the helm and set the brand back on its course since the departure of John Galliano from the fashion house.
For the drawing, as I didn't have a sufficient light source for tracing the image on catridge paper, I had to do it the old fashioned way, drawing the image side by side with the original photo. I had to leave the skin colour blank as I am yet to find a skin tone marker, but the rest of the garment was coloured using watercolour pencils (a trial as we were taught to use watercolour paints). There is still lots of room for improvement but I think it turned out okay.
