Style Inspiration | the Cape

Photos of red carpet arrivals at the Academy Awards yesterday had me thinking that this year's Oscars gowns were a little on the boring side - except for actress Gwyneth Paltrow, who looked chic and stunning in her Tom Ford dress and matching cape.

Who would have thought that a floor-length cape could complete a red carpet look for the Oscars?!

Alternatively, you could throw a tuxedo jacket over an evening gown or even a cocktail dress to achieve a similar sophisticated look. Pairing it with minimal jewellery and a simple clutch will help retain the focus on your upper body.

So ladies, next time you head out, throw a cape or drape a jacket over your shoulder to add that edgy touch of style!

    1. Those are great questions lala, and definitely worth pondering.

From what I have seen in stores this autumn/winter in Australia, capes are definitely still "in". We're actually seeing more cape coats this year in shop windows than we did last year. There seems to be a subtle shift towards the more sophisticated cape design - the style where arms come out through splits on the inside of the cape sleeves whilst the beautiful cape shape is retained at the back. I think consumers are definitely still in the mood for capes this year as there still seems an association with a "high fashion" and "style savvy" image for those wearing capes as outerwear.

As for the cape tee, they were quite popular in Summer but the general perception over here is that they're more suited to teenagers. For winter, we'll probably see knits in the cape tees shape worn over short dresses or skirts with tights and boots.

So which direction will sleeves take? Well I do hope that in addition to cape styles, we'll see more embellished sleeves - anything from leather panel details to sequins.

      Hope that helped!

      xoxo
