postcards | Sunset in New York

the view from 102 floors above Manhattan

Each and every one of us have our favourite time of the day, and sunset has always been my favourite. It is a time to pause, to reflect briefly on the day gone by and to prepare oneself for the night that is about to unfold.

Midway through January this year, my friend and I were playing tourist in New York when an impending snow storm unexpectedly shortened our stay. Having never encountered a snow storm before, I was not about to brace myself for a weekend trapped inside a New York hotel room. So we packed our bags, groveled on the phone to JetBlue for a last-minute change of flights, and crammed our remaining sightseeing activities into one day. Towards the end of the day we made it to Tribeca and the One World Observatory, anxiously rushing into the high speed elevator up to the observation deck as we were already running very late for our pre-booked observation time.

By some stroke of luck, we arrived just as the sun started setting over Manhattan. A gradual silence fell over the observation deck as we, along with the many other tourists there, were stunned speechless by the beauty of the setting sun over Manhattan. As the sun retreated into hiding and the city lit up, the chatter on the observation deck also resumed. Life goes on as usual.
