Inspired by Vermeer's Girl with the Pearl Earring
This season, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli managed to carry through the overall Victorian mood of their collection whilst adding a youthful feel with above-the-knee hemlines, peter pan collars paired with a versatile side plait. The shoes, featuring a side split just next to the ankle, tapped into one of the biggest trends for autumn/winter shoes this year. But what stood out from this collection were the beautiful blue and white embroidery patterns that reminds me so much of the classic chinaware of the same colour themes, a style which will hopefully create a ripple effect in high street stores.
If feels as though Chiuri and Piccioli have been trying to perfect the look of graceful austerity since they stepped up to the insurmountable task of replacing Valentino Garavani at Valentino; austerity is not a mood that one normally associates with Valentino (famous for it's seductive red dresses) but finally, we have a collection that gets the balance just right.
