Nicola Jane | Monochrome

This week Nicola and I finally did a black and white shoot! We were joined by Jaz from JazartDesignStudio who decided it was time to push our creative boundaries by making things more "dramatic".
Armed with an ipad, a dropbox folder full of black and white photos and a few Harpers Bazaar's for inspiration, we set to work.
The photos were taken on the staircase in my house which, incidentally, has great lighting and a blank background. This is the first time that I've actually photographed with my camera set to monochrome (something that is advised against by the pro's). I was hesitant about shooting in monochrome at first because you lose the versatility of having the photo in colour, but I am pretty happy with the result. Not only did we manage to try out new ideas but we also learnt to consider things from a black and white perspective, emphasizing patterns and shadows and toying with the light.
Oh and we also repeatedly knocked over this huge vase of dry flowers that my mum loves. To be fair it was kind of in the way and we did try to restore it to its original shape! It was hilarious at the time but then mum came home and saw the damage and she was not happy at all...oh well :)
Maybe we can have a damage-free shoot next time...
