Beehives, wing-tipped eyes and an unmistakable attitude, the Amy Winehouse effect was all over JPG's latest Spring 2012 Couture show. It may seem strange to some that Gaultier chose Winehouse as the inspiration for his couture collection, considering that her style does not exactly fit the definition of "haute couture", but in many ways this choice makes sense. Gaultier is famous for exaggerating the silhouette of the female body, and incorporating Winehouse's signature corsets into his collection is almost too natural, as corsets are essentially used to highlight the hourglass figure and the decolletage. What I loved the most about this collection is that Gaultier took Winehouse's style one step further by combining that signature attitude with asymmetric suits, giving a new meaning to the term "power woman". As a fan of Winehouse's music, I find this to be a touching tribute to the late singer and as much as this may seem ignorant, I fail to understand how this collection could be "in bad taste".
Thank you Gaultier, for bringing us a beautiful tribute.
R.I.P Amy.
